Class Tier: Tier A
Class Session: 2022 Session 1

This class is for puppies 8 weeks to 6 months of age. The S.T.A.R. Puppy acronym stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility. This AKC program encourages new dog owners to give their puppies a good start in life. The class curriculum will include the elements required to achieve the AKC S*T*A*R Puppy Award. You will learn through play and positive reinforcement how to communicate with your puppy and teach your puppy how to get along with other dogs and humans. You will learn some basic obedience exercises, build yours and your puppy’s confidence, and improve your bond with your pup. We will also teach basic doggy care and safety. This class will introduce you to some of the Canine Good Citizen components so you are ready to move onto the next course, CGC.

All puppy and handler teams who finish this class will have the opportunity to take the S.T.A.R. Puppy final evaluation. Owner and puppy must attend a minimum of six classes to qualify for the award and successfully complete the twenty items on the evaluation. Upon passing the evaluation, you will receive an AKC form that you may send to AKC for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy “Packet”, which includes a medal, certificate of completion, and informational resources. Class Tiers

Class Tier System

Our goal is for dog and handler teams to progress through a structured curriculum of classes that are grouped in levels of ability. Before students may progress from Tier A to Tier B, we strongly recommend teams pass all Tier A level classes. For Tier B through Tier D, progression depends on student ability.

* STAR Puppy
* Tier A classes (beginner): Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Focus and Impulse Control (FIC), and Obedience I (Ob I).
* Tier B classes (novice to intermediate): Tricks Novice/Intermediate, Agility Foundations, and Obedience II.
* Tier C classes (intermediate): Agility I and Rally I.
* Tier D classes (advanced): Agility II, Rally II, and Show N Go.
* Specialty classes (conditional).

We adapted the AKC STAR Puppy and CGC classes to fit our club needs. We offer AKC testing for these two classes at the end of every session. We suggest that teams first progress from STAR to CGC, which follows the AKC program design. Tier A level teams may then take FIC and Ob I to finish off Tier A class progression. Please talk with instructors or the Director of Training if you have questions about class progression or availability.
