Welcome to our August 2023 Newsletter

Shout out to all the volunteers that made the GSDOC Agility trial a success story!! We had approximately 700 dog runs over the course of three days with 30 percent qualifying! The Scotsman Center still proves to be a great arena for us and we will be continuing to use this facility for our next Agility trial – November 10-12 with Daniel LeGrave as our judge. Premiums will be going out shortly. If you are not aware, we are canceling our January agility trials in favor of this new date – 2nd weekend in November because Utah weather is typically more favorable in November. We are also in preparation for next years trials, July 12-14 will be supported by Judge Stephanie Sibol and our November 8-10 trial will be ran by Tracy Mazur.

We are so thankful for such great judges!

Summer break activities

This summer the club was able to offer a new activity during our summer break. On July 18th and July 25 we made drop in opportunities available for members wanting to practice or learn new skills in rally and agility. Thank you to Ann Miller and Jenn Hair who came to assist anyone who wanted the extra time.

This session we are offering a variety of classes to our members and to the general public. Star Puppy class is helping owners get their pups off to a great start by learning that people and other dogs can be fun. These puppies also learn to tolerate being handled, groomed, and to follow their owners on a leash. Essential Skills is a new class that is being offered. Owners are learning how to use different reward markers to tell their dog when and how they may access reinforcement (food and toys). These reward markers are then used to reinforce essential behavior such as loose leash walking, sit, down, and stand. Focus and Impulse Control is back!!! This class is the perfect follow up class to the Essential Skills class. Dogs are taught self-regulation through games and are learning very quickly that self-control is the key to getting what they want. Canine Good Citizen class gives dogs an opportunity to brush up and build up their skills in preparation for the CGC test. This session the club is running four specialized classes. These are Scent Work (Foundation and Advanced), AKC Fit Dog, and Agility Sequencing With Jumps and Tunnels. We would like to give a HUGE shout out to all of our teachers and assistants this session: Tone Halverson, Jennifer Hair, Alma Fong, Karyn Forsey, Shannon Farnsworth, Ann Miller, and Ashleigh Young.

We appreciate your time and efforts!

Fill the Bowl

We are collecting donations of dog food for Fill the Bowl. Food goes to needy dogs. Bring your food donation to class or the general meetings. Soon, there will be an option to make a monetary donation on

Park and Potty

Most Golden Spike Dog Obedience classes and meetings are held at Versa Dog Sports. The parking areas are marked in green—please park perpendicular to the side of the building to maximize space. Red areas indicate that parking is not allowed, while the blue spot indicates Handicap parking. Although there are many yellow potty areas, please do not let your dogs potty on anything that is manmade. Everyone is required to pick up their dog’s waste and to dispose of it in outside trash cans.

Fill Out Our Member Survey

Please take two minutes to fill out the GSDOC Member Survey 2023. This survey will close on August 12th. Your feedback is important to us.
