September General Meeting Recap: Nose Work

Addie Hellmers presented on nose work at this month's general meeting. Addie got her start in nose work after raising dogs for explosive detection for the Department of Homeland Security. Nose work and scent work are fairly similar with nuanced differences in the competition levels and some different training methods. Addie competes with the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) which doesn't have a strong presence in Utah, but it is growing. She shared training methods that work for her and her dogs such as putting the reward directly on the scent container to help your dog build a strong connection between the scent and the reward. A great place to acquire supplies is K9 Nose Work Source. They sell all kinds of containers to hide scent in. Addie also did a demo search on vehicles outside with her dog. The alert was so clear and strong! Big thanks to Addie for her time and expertise.
