Puppy Manners Class |
| Desc: | The puppy manners class is offered to the public and Club members. This class is for puppies three to six months old. The class is designed to socialize the dogs, to develop good manners in playing with and enjoying other puppies, to help them adjust to strangers, and to start them on the way to becoming good family members. Basic manners is introduced in this class. Family members are encouraged to attend classes and participate in training and discussions on care, grooming and handling a puppy. Training classes consist of eight (8) weekly sessions of one hour and daily home practice. For more personalized attention this class is limited to 12 puppies based on a first come registration. |

Basic Obedience I Class |
| Desc: | The basic obedience I class is offered to the public and club members. The class is designed to socialize dogs. Its focus is basic obedience and household manners. Dogs will be taught to respond to the commands to heel, sit, down, stay, and come. All work at this level is done on a leash. Classes involve group work combined with individual help and observation. Each lesson builds upon the previous lesson for logical progressive achievement. Class size is limited to 13 students per instructor. This assures more personalized attention. Those who choose may take the Canine Good Citizen test at the end of the course. Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC) Golden Spike Dog Obedience Club sponsors the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test to recognize and officially certify those dogs that possess the attributes that enable them to serve effectively as personal companions and as members in good standing with the community. Tests are scheduled at the completion of each Basic Obedience I Class. The test is available for Club members and the general public. The CGC test and training are conducted for other clubs and organizations on request. The test consists of several parts. Some of the things in the test are stranger approaching to greet owner and dog; dog allowing stranger to pet it; general appearance and grooming; walking under control on a loose leash; walking politely though a crowd; demonstrating sit, down and stay; reaction to another dog; reaction to distraction; and supervised isolation. All components of the test must be passed successfully. Any aggression is a failing mark. This is a very informal test. Once passed your dog will have an official AKC title. The test is offered to mixed breed dogs as well as purebred dogs. There is a $10.00 non-refundable fee for the CGC test. |

Basic Obedience III Class |
| Desc: | This is an advanced obedience class for dogs and handlers that have graduated from both the Basic Obedience I and II classes (or equivalent level of instruction to be determined by the instructor on a case by case). Emphasis is on development of working precision and handling skills for both those training a home companion and those preparing their dogs for competition. The dog must be trustworthy off leash and must come when called regardless of the environment. The dog must be able to work off leash in a variety of environments such as in and out of sight stays, off leash heeling, examinations, and recalls. Other Dogs will be working at various levels of ability in this class, and each dog must be able to work without being distracted by the other dogs in the class. This is an 8-week course. |
| Prerequisites: |
Succesful graduation from both the Basic Obedience I and II classes (or equivalent level of instruction to be determined by the instructor on a case by case), and demonstration of skills that the dog and handler are ready for this course. If training was completed somewhere other than Golden Spike Dog Obedience club the dog and handler will need to be assessed by the instructor before registering for this class. No dog or people aggressive dogs allowed in this class.

| Desc: | This is a new competitive class developed by AKC. All dogs compete on lead. Junior Handlers Basic Show Preparation Class |
| Desc: | This class will be for Juniors, age 7-18, who have never shown their dogs in AKC or other registered events. It will be taught by an experienced Junior with assistance from other handlers and will cover the basic things to expect including but not limited to: How to dress, how to check in for classes and be prepared when entering the ring, how to send in all required forms to the AKC to register as a Junior Handler, how to conduct yourself as a show participant, knowing the rules for your event and what to expect from show officials and other handlers. Course will primarily cover Obedience and Agility handling but if there is enough interest, confirmation may be added. This will be an 8-week course and will be held at the regular training location on Tuesday nights. Time is under discussion. |
